—-Luwingu District Commissioner, Mambwe Katontoka, says government, through the Ministry of Home Affairs, will on Friday this week officially open the recently constructed Luwingu State Prison.

Mrs Katontoka said the opening of the Luwingu State Prison will decongest Milima State Prison in Kasama district in the Northern Province where Luwingu inmates were being taken to after been convicted by the district subordinate court.

She explained that most inmates serving their jail sentences have been taken to Milima State Prison in Kasama because the old Luwingu prison was declared not suitable for human habitation.

Mrs Katontoka said the opening of the state prison in Luwingu district will help reduce some challenges the prison authorities in the district were facing in transporting the inmates to and from Kasama on a monthly basis.

She noted that some remandees have several times broken the police cells in a bid to run away from prosecution and before appearing in court, adding that this will be happening because the prison will be secured.

Mrs Katontoka said the prison will be officially opened by the Minister of Home Affairs, Ngosa Simbyakula.
