—Luwingu District HIV/AIDS Advisor, Nonde Lwatula, is happy with the overwhelming response by the community over the usage of the recent distributed condoms in bars, government offices and at the bus station in Luwingu district of the Northern Province.

Mr Lwatula said the usage of condoms in Luwingu district is overwhelming as most people aged over 18 years have continued approaching his office for free distribution of condoms.

He said many people were in the past shunning collecting or asking for free condom distributed by the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health, saying it perceived them as having no good morals.

Mr Lwatula was speaking during the Heads of Government Departments’ meeting held at the district commissioner’s office yesterday evening.

He said government, through the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health, donated 10, 000 sachets of condoms to the District AIDS Task Force (DATF) to be distributed to all strategic places for the community.

Mr Lwatula said although HIV/AIDS was still at 4.1 per cent it was important that the youths are encouraged to use condoms each time they had sexual intercourse, adding that this could prevent them from acquiring the HIV virus which has no cure.

“I am happy with the people of Luwingu for the overwhelming response over the use of condoms in the recent past which they collected as if they were fruits,” he observed.

And Luwingu District Commissioner, Mambwe Katontoka, appealed to DATF to extend the distribution of condoms to far-flung areas of the district like Shimumbi, Chungu, Katuta and Museba areas in order for both women and the youths to access them.

“You should not only concentrate on the district centre but also try by all means to distribute the condoms to other parts of the district,” she said.

She said women must not shun using the condoms because they protect transmission of deadly diseases such HIV/AIDS, gonorrhoea, cancer of the urethra and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

Meanwhile, Luwingu district Medical Doctor, Ernest Mutale, appealed to DAFT to consider distributing condoms to inmates at the state prison.

He said people should not pretend that there is no sexual intercourse (sodomy) in prisons.
