An 80 year old man of Maiteneke village in Chief Mwamba’s area in Mbala District in the Northern Province has died in an inferno after a grass thatched house he was sleeping in caught fire on Tuesday evening.

Northern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga disclosed to ZANIS in Luwingu that Felisto Simpemba aged 80 was burnt to ashes while his wife Rosina Simpemba aged 67 sustained serious burns on her body.

Ms Katanga said Ms Simpemba sustained serious burns on both her hands and head and is battling for her life in Mbala District General Hospital.

She said the deceased’s brother Joseph Simutowe aged 68 also of Maiteneke village reported the incident to the police.

Mr Simutowe narrated that the duo were chatting outside their house and decided to put the brazier inside their house in order to keep warm.

In the process their bed made of grass caught fire and burnt the old man to ashes while his wife managed to escape the inferno with burns.

Ms Katanga said Police have since authorised relatives to bury the ashes of the Felisto Simpemba after investigations conducted ruled out foul play.
