Shakas’ case adjourned

 

Kaoma, August 18, 2014, ZANIS —-  Kaoma magistrate Jane Sifali has adjourned a case in which Jonas Shakafuswa is charged with three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm to three cadres .

 

 

The lawmaker is also charged with one count of unlawful wounding to Sikananu Akabondo contrary to section 248 of the criminal procedure code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

 

 

However Mr. Shakafuswa has denied the charges.

 

 

Particulars of the offence were that on August 16, 2014 whilst at Mwanambuyu area in Namafulo ward of Kaoma district in Western province of the Republic of Zambia, Jonas Shakafuswa, a Katuba constituency UPND law maker did assault the four mentioned persons namely Bosco Kawanga, Sinyinda Mukosiku and Phenias Imboela .

 

 

Mr Shakafuswa who was represented by a defense counsel Mwinga Cheelo of Muneza Mwimbu and company applied for a bail pending trial according to pursuant 123 of the criminal procedure code Chapter 88 of the Laws of Zambia.

 

 

 

Defense counsel Cheelo said the case committed by his client was a bailable one and as such he prayed to the court saying his client was a Zambian who is of fixed abode, capable of raising sureties and ready to abide by the conditions that the court may attach.

 

 

 

Mr Cheelo further said that Mr Shakafuswa is opposition UPND Member of Parliament for Katuba constituency adding that if bail is denied, the nation will be deprived of his contributions to very important national duties.

 

 

Magistrate Jane Sifali considered the prayer bail application from the defense counsel and granted Mr Shakafuswa a cash bail of K 2, 000 and two sureties who are Kaoma residents and the matter has been adjourned to September 18, 2014 for commencement of trial.
