United Party for National Development leader Hakainde Hichilema has urged Zambians to thwart alleged maneuvers by the Patriotic Front to manipulate the enactment of the new constitution through Parliament.

Mr Hichilema in a statement obtained by QFM News today says Zambians should vote for UPND candidates in areas were parliamentary by-elections are being held to stop the PF from using its numbers in parliament to manipulate the people’s constitution.

Mr Hichilema says they are convinced that the constitution will end up in parliament and with a PF majority it will be a repeat of the 1996 scenario when MMD Members of Parliament who were in the majority then passed the current constitution.

He says the PF would rather waste money on by-elections with a view to increasing numbers in parliament and manipulate the constitution adoption process.

Mr Hichilema has also called on his party members to conduct peaceful campaigns despite provocation from the PF.

He states that UPND will remain a peaceful party even under provocation and has also urge the Electoral Commission of Zambia and law enforcement agencies to be firm and fair in their implementation of the law and not allow themselves to be used as wings of the PF.
