Chungu takes lead in developing his constituency

Luanshya  Central Member of Parliament, Stephen Chungu,  has undertaken to use his position to spearhead the prudent utilization of government resources by providing leadership in planning and lobbying government and other stakeholders to effectively contribute to the district’s infrastructural development in key socio economic areas of health and education.

Mr Chungu observed that failure to properly utilize resources given to the constituencies for developmental projects was one of the major challenges impeding beneficial and tangible development at constituency level.

 

He was speaking in Luashya when he visited the Technical and Vocational Training Centre (TVTC) to learn some of the operational challengers that the college was facing.

 

The Member of Parliament was taken aback by the poor state of college hostels, limited student accommodation and office space, inadequate learning machinery and equipment and erratic water supply among others.

 

He assured the school of government intervention into the matter, saying the situation would normalize once the college was merged into a college university with two other sister institutions, Luanshya Business and Technical College (LBTC) and In Service Training College  (ISTC) as government had already started procuring equipment and teaching materials for the upgrading of the colleges.

 

And TVTC Principal, Sangistar Jere, said even when a contractor was already on site for the construction of new student hostel under the combing of the institutions, the merger was still a long way as it would only be made possible following the repealing of the TEVETA Act which was still under parliament.

 

Ms Jere disclosed that government was constructing 2 by 4 storey hostel buildings which will be used to house students after the merge but said the college was still facing numerous challenges.

 

And Mr Chungu, however, said the construction of the TVTC clinic which will be situated in Kamirenda Township would be completed in four months’ time.

 

He noted that once the clinic was completed, it would help in decongesting the college as it was accommodating the clinic in the college student centre, which was serving a population of over 5000 people from Kamirenda Township and other areas.  

 

The Luanshya Central MP said the clinic, which was being constructed at a cost of K256 using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and had reached the roof level, would include three admission wards, maternity wing and a paediatric section.

 

He added that the Patriotic Front government was committed to delivering its campaign promises to the people and as such was constructing a total of five clinics in Kamirenda Township under CDF using the same model.
