Over 500 Liuwa children not in school
Kalabo, July 29, 2014, ZANIS……..Over 500 children in Libonda ward of Liuwa Constituency in Kalabo district are out of school because the area has no education facilities.
Ward Councilor Kaitwa Wamuyima told ZANIS in an interview in Kalabo today that the nearest community school is situated 20 kilo meters away at Nalueti adding that the children cannot manage to walk such a long distance.
Mr Wamuyima disclosed that as a result girl children as young as 15 years are being forced into early marriages.
“I have over 500 children in my ward that are not going to school because we have no community school in the area. Most children cannot manage to walk a distance of 20 kilometers to get to school,” Councilor Wamuyima said.
The Councilor feared that the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the ward would increase if nothing was done to correct the situation because children were now indulging in sexual activities.
He appealed to government and Non Government Organizations to come on board and construct a community school in the ward to enable the children have access to education.
Councilor Wamuyima also noted that development will continue lacking in the area if the local people do not attain the necessary educational levels.
