SOURCE- $Zambia_Daily_Mail–The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has welcomed Government’s decision to transform the old Kitwe remand prison into a juvenile reformatory school.

Human Rights Commission Acting Spokesperson, Simon Mulumbi, said the decision will assist in improving the delivery of juvenile justice.

Mr Mulumbi said this in a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today in response to Home Affairs Minister, Ngosa Simbyakula, who was quoted in yesterday’s Zambia Daily Mail as saying Government is assessing old Kitwe Remand Prison with a view to transforming the facility into a juvenile reformatory centre.

Mr Mulumbi said the development will also enhance compliance with minimum standards to strengthen protection of children in conflict with the law.

He further said the pronouncement signifies Government’s will and commitment to ensuring that appropriate detention facilities for children are provided in accordance with the national and international child rights minimum standards.
