Republican Vice President Guy Scott says it is Patriotic Front (PF) government’s desire to ensure that virtues of the public service are further uplifted in the country to improve service delivery to the people.

Dr. Scott says it is therefore incumbent upon all public service employees to observe and adhere to the virtues of public service in the execution of their duties.

The vice president was speaking this morning in Lusaka when he graced this year’s Africa Public Service Day under the theme, ‘Celebrating 50 year of God’s Favor: A Public Service Anchored on Continuous Improvement in service for the Sustainable Development and Wellbeing of the people of Zambia.’

And Dr. Scott has praised the collaboration and cooperation the public service has shown to the PF government in the 3 years it has been in power.

He says in the area of Gender, the Public service has recorded improvements in the number of the women being recruited and appointed to senior positions, while in the public service system the public service has continuously been improving in a quest to deliver quality services to the people.

Dr Scott adds that in the labour and social security sector, the public service has also continued to provide technical expertise to government in formulating and implementing polices which have created an enabling environment for job creation and improved salaries and conditions of service for workers.

The vice president further notes that in the health sector, several improvements have been recorded since independence and that the public service has been and continues to be a major provider of quality health services to the people in the country.

Speaking at the same event, Zambia Congress for Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Leonard Hikaumba appealed to government to find other ways of generating revenue as opposed imposing wage freezes on the public service.

Mr. Hikaumba says government can for example deal with companies evading taxes in order to increase its revenue.
