MUSIKA in Choma
AS Zambia joins the rest of Africa in commemorating the Day of the African Child, a 17-year-old girl of Choma has called on Government to ensure that disabled children and orphans have access to quality education.
This year’s Day of the African Child commemoration has been themed `A child friendly, quality, free and compulsory education for all children in Africa’.
Robin Siamasamu, a Grade 11 pupil at Choma Secondary School, wants Government and all concerned citizens to help improve the welfare of children, especially orphans, and make them feel loved and appreciated.
Siamasamu said this in Choma on Saturday after being crowned Miss African Queen, beating six other contestants that participated in a beauty contest aimed at raising funds for the Day of the African child celebrations to be held in Choma today.
“In my compound [township], I see a lot of orphaned children who need help, some of them don’t have clothes while others need school fees.
“I would be happy if Government or people can help them go to school and just make them feel loved and appreciated,” she said.
Siamasamu, whose dream is to be a nurse, urged members of the community to help children who are in need.
Earlier, Southern Province sports development officer Kennedy Mubanga said Government will continue to promote activities that inspire children and youths to become better citizens.
Speaking when he officially opened the beauty pageant, Mr Mubanga said Government wants children, especially girls, to work hard, have high self- esteem and become better citizens who will contribute to the development of the country.
“Today, we want to motivate you to be queens. If you work hard and be disciplined you can become anything you wish to be in future,” he said.
And Day of the African Child entertainment committee member Armytagy Mumbwali said stakeholders should use the day to inspire children to become better citizens.
Mr Mumbwali also appealed to the Government to build recreational centres for youths in Choma in order to keep them away from vices.
