–  Plans to scale up the comprehensive condom distribution networks in North Western province this year may not be implemented due to lack of financial support.

North Western Provincial HIV/AIDS Coordination Adviser Brian Sweta disclosed this to ZANIS in an interview in Solwezi District today.

Mr. Sweta says his office in 2013 implemented the first phase of comprehensive condom distribution programming in three districts of Mufumbwe, Zambezi and Solwezi.

He said 120 volunteers were trained in distribution of condoms using non-traditional channels through the financial support from United Nations Fund for Population Agency (UNFPA).

He said the programme led the three districts to score high in condom distribution through barber shops and saloons and other non-traditional channels.

He said after successfully implementing the programme for one year, the plan was to use the good results of the first phase to roll out to other remaining districts this year.

However, he is doubtful about implementing the second phase of the programme because UNFPA has not indicated interest to support the programme.

Mr Sweta has since appealed to well wishers for support, saying condom use still remains one of the most effective interventions in HIV prevention that needs to be promoted.
