Government says it has resorted to do the research on the Sondashi formula locally despite it being expensive.
Health Minister Joseph Kasonde said after years of waiting for research on the drug to be conducted in South Africa, government has resorted to do the research locally despite it being expensive.
Dr Kasonde said he will do everything possible to procure equipment necessary for producing capsules for the Sondashi formula.
Dr Kasonde was speaking when he visited the Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC) at Ndola Central Hospital in Ndola on June 10th.
The Health Minister explained that the South African Industrial and Scientific Research Centre where the Sondashi Formula was taken to have it produced in measurable dozes of capsules had not succeeded to do so until now, but had instead requested to be given more samples of the drug.
“They requested for new samples of the formula, saying the ones we gave them are now old, but we could not agree to give them new samples, “he said.
Dr Kasonde further explained that the Ministry of Health then contacted a research centre in Ethiopia to have the capsules produced from there but did not receive a response on time.
He said it was after this that government resorted to having the capsule of the drug produced locally despite equipment needed for doing so being expensive.
Dr Kasonde said with the necessary equipment, Zambia has the capacity to continue conducting research on the formula as it has good research centres and scientists.
He reiterated government’s commitment to secure the necessary equipment to produce the capsules in order to move forward with research on the drug.
The Minister stated that research on the Sondashi formula so far required for the drug to be produced in measurable quantities of capsules.
He said government is committed to move forward with research on the drug as it may have the capacity of saving lives.
The Sondashi formula is a traditional herb mixture said to have the capacity of curing the HIV virus but currently still undergoing scientific research.
