ZAMBIA’S hopes of winning silverware at the ongoing 2014 African Badminton Championship in Botswana ended in disappointment after failing to go past the group stage in the team event.
The Zambian team opened the campaign with a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Egypt on Wednesday before recording another heavy 5-0 defeat to pre-tournament favorites, Nigeria.
Woes continued for the Zambian team that comprised Ogar and Evelyn Siamupangila, Mary Chilambe, Donald Mabo and Ngosa Chongo as they went on lose 0-5 to Congo, before wrapping up their group B games with a 5-0 whipping to Mauritius.
Zambians will now need to raise their game when the individual event starts tomorrow.
In Group A, South Africa lived up to their billing as joint favorites for the team event with Nigeria as they also posted massive 5-0 wins over host Botswana and Cameroon before subduing Seychelles 3-2.
The South Africans are set to successfully defend the title won against Nigeria in Mauritius in 2013. The championship started on Wednesday last and concludes on April 29.
