 A Police officer from Mazabuka Central Police station has been arrested and detained in custody in connection for allegedly beating a 37 year old man to death.

 

 

Constable Lovemore Daka has been remanded in custody at Mazabuka Central Police station to help with investigations leading to the death of Robison Chitalu a resident of Mulonga Extension in Mazabuka Township.

 

 

Southern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda confirmed to ZANIS in Mazabuka on March 26th.

 

 

She said  that the police officer who is alleged to have beaten up the man yesterday morning is being held at the police station to help with investigations.

 

 

Ms Chikwanda however said the actual cause of death has not yet been established as they are still awaiting post mortem.

 

 

However eye witnesses in the area revealed that the police officer beat up Chitalu yesterday along the shop corridors where he was selling using a butt for the AK 47 riffle which was in his possession after he insulted him.

 

 

The vendors who sell merchandise along the shop corridors together with the deceased person said Chitalu was badly battered by the uniformed police officer in the presence of onlookers along the shop corridors who could not help but watch.

 

 

And Alfred Kagolo who is Mulonga Extension Chairperson who reported the matter to police around 05 30 hours this morning said the deceased was found to have sustained injuries on his stomach.

 

 

Mr. Kagolo disclosed that according to the deceased’s friends, the 37 year old who was beaten yesterday around 10 hours complained of severe pain following the beating that he suffered at the hands of the police officer.

 

The body of Chitalu is since lying in the Mazabuka District hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem.
