Stakeholders in Solwezi district have called on government to find a reputable contractor to upgrade and rehabilitate the over 20km of urban roads.

The stakeholders said government should find a contractor who has the capacity to carry out the works and one with necessary experience, manpower and machinery.

They noted with sadness that most of the contractors who have in the past been engaged to work on the roads have done shoddy works.

The stakeholders were speaking in Solwezi during a public consultative meeting on the social and economic impact of the upgrading and rehabilitation of the urban roads organised by Bari Zambia limited a consultant on the project.

One of the stakeholders, Dexter Phiri said the project is a welcome move as it will help change the face of the town.

Mr Phiri said Solwezi is yearning for roads that will stand the taste of time going by the increase in the number of vehicles.

Another stakeholder Benson Ngambo called on the consultant to closely monitor the contractor who will handle the project to ensure quality work and timeliness.

Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing has earmarked on the construction of 16 urban roads to be upgraded to bituminous standard and works are expected to start as soon as the rains subsidise.
