DEC nabs 18 for drug trafficking

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested 18 people for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.

Among those arrested is Mariah Mtonga, 36, of Makeni for trafficking in 0.6 grammes of cannabis and a 16 year old boy of Chibolya for trafficking in seven balls of cannabis weighing 16.5g.

According to a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka by DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo, six out of the 18 people who the commission has arrested are residents of Chibolya Township in Lusaka.

Meanwhile, the Commission has also arrested a cashier of a named bank of Mazabuka for money laundering activities involving over K80, 000.

Chris Chani, 27, a cashier of St. Edmund’s Extension in Mazabuka has been arrested for theft by servant contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

The particulars of the offense are that on the dates unknown but between 1st November 2013 and 31st January 2014, Chris Chani and other persons unknown did steal about K82, 467 by making false accounting entries of the accounts of unsuspecting customers.

Ms. Katongo said the suspects are all expected to appear in court soon.
