POLICE in Chipata District in Eastern Province have arrested 11 people in connection with three truckloads of Government subsidised fertiliser which went missing some time last year.

Provincial commissioner of police Grace Chipalila confirmed in Chipata yesterday that two drivers, an agent from Nyiombo Investment and eight business executives from Chipata, who were part of the alleged syndicate, had been arrested.

Ms Chipalila said the first truck was impounded on December 31, 2013 after a tip from members of the public.

She said investigations revealed that the truck belonged to Transnabila Transport Company contracted by Nyiombo to help transport fertiliser into the country.

Ms Chipalila said the recovery of the first truck helped the police track down the other two missing vehicles.

She said the fertiliser which had been sold was worth K360, 000.

Ms Chipalila said only 677 bags were recovered and that police would continue investigating the matter.

She said the suspects were expected to appear in court today.
