TWELVE people sustained injuries in Kabwe on Sunday after a 75-seater Lusaka-bound bus in which they were travelling was allegedly hit by a Toyota Carina and plunged into a ditch.
The driver of the Carina, registration number ALE 6378 driven by a Zambia Army officer identified as Chiliza Mbewe who sustained a fractured pelvis, is nursing serious injuries in Kabwe General Hospital.
Central Province medical  officer Rosemary Mwanza and Deputy Central Province commissioner of police, Edwin Bwanga confirmed  the accident in separate interviews which happened near Chindwin Barracks in Kabwe around  03:40 hours on Sunday.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened after the driver of the Carina, who was coming from the opposite direction, failed to maintain his lane and hit into the Marcopolo Scania bus, registration number ABD 3245 belonging to CV Transport, and forced the driver to swerve before plunging in the ditch.
The eyewitnesses said if the driver did not swerve, the two vehicles could have collided.
Dr Mwanza said Kabwe General Hospital received 12 accident victims nine of whom were treated and discharged.
She said two women and the driver of the Carina were still admitted to the hospital.
The two women were nursing soft tissue injuries while the man was nursing a fractured pelvis.
Mr Bwanga said the bus, which was being driven by Mulenga Chimfwembe, was travelling from Nakonde to Lusaka when the accident happened.
He said both vehicles were extensively damaged.
Another  bus belonging  to CV  Transport  was on Saturday involved in an accident in Chibombo in which five people died.
The search for the driver who is on the run following the accident has continued.
