Mwilola wins national chess trials

PHYLIS Mwilola yesterday won the national chess trials women’s category at Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka.
And International Master (IM) Kelvin Chumfwa was by press time leading the men’s category.
Mwilola led a contingent of five players that were chosen to compete with the current national team in February next year.
Mwilola managed 5.5 points from six rounds.
In second position was Yvonne Saina with 4.5 points while the third position had three players tied on four points.
The three players are Maureen Chilufya, Mulwale Kabamba and Alva Sorensen who all made it to the final team.
The five players will compete with the current national team that comprises World Female Masters (WFM) Epah Tembo and Lorita Mwango and unrated Constance Mbata and Linda Hamoonga.
In the men’s category, Chumfwa was cruising to victory with six points while his brother Stanley, who is also an IM, was tied at 5.5 points with Boniface Ng’onga.
Joshua Mulauzi, Geoffrey Luanja, Lemmy Chishala, Clement Maimbo and Kela Siame tied on 4.5 points each.
Five players will be selected to compete with the current national team next February.
The current national team has International Masters Daniel Jere, Gillian Bwalya and Chitumbo Mwali, FIDE Master Douglas Munenga and Candidate Master Andrew Kayonde.
