This is in a matter in which Chirwa was jointly charged with ZRL finance director Regina Mwale with two counts of corrupt practices.

The two have denied the charges.

Chirwa, 59, was charged with failure to declare interest when he allegedly recommended that Clavel Incorporated Limited, a company in which he was a shareholder, be awarded a contract to train ZRL employees.

In the second count, Chirwa and Mwale, 50, were charged for abuse of authority of office following the manner in which they authorised a total payment of K289, 128.84 to Fallsway Apartments for accommodation.

This was allegedly for the benefit of Chirwa and it was done without following laid-down procedure.

In June this year, President Michael Sata retired Chirwa in national interest after being suspended from his post earlier in April.
