Government has purchased one hundred and sixty basic life support ambulances at a total cost of four hundred and two million, seven hundred and ten thousand kwacha.

Speaking during the handover of the ambulances in Lusaka this morning, Health Minister Dr. Joseph Kasonde says government is committed to providing equity of access to high quality, cost effective healthcare closer to the people.

Dr. Kasonde says it is in line with this vision that the ministry of Health has focused on strengthening emergency health services in order to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of emergency healthcare at all levels of health care system.

Dr Kasonde adds that the increase in the number of road accidents, non communicable diseases and maternity cases also compelled the ministry of Health to embark on a coordinated response by introducing the directorate of mobile and emergency health services.

Dr. Kasonde adds that there is need for all stakeholders to get involved and supplement government’s efforts to achieving the needed success in delivering quality healthcare services.

He has also urged the recipient health institutions of the ambulances to use them prudently for the intended purposes, stating that the ambulances should be jealously looked after and serviced regularly.
