PATRIOTIC Front (PF) director for media and publicity Chanda Mfula has congratulated the UPND and MMD for winning the Solwezi East, Kafulafuta and Chipata Central seats in Thursday’s by-elections.
Mr Mfula posted on the social media Twitter yesterday that the PF congratulates the two opposition parties for winning three of the four seats.
“We also congratulate our candidate, Ingrid Mphande, and the entire PF campaign team on our victory in the Mkushi North by-election,” Mr Mfula said.
“We congratulate the UPND on their victory in Kafulafuta and Solwezi East by-elections and the MMD on retaining Chipata Central,” he writes.
Mr Mfula said the ruling party hopes to do better in future elections.
“We hope to do better next time in explaining our policies and programmes to the people and we believe they will reconsider their options and vote for the PF, which is committed to developing Zambia,” Mr Mfula writes.
Mr Mfula said the PF’s victory in Mkushi North has increased its presence in Parliament.
And the UPND says the party’s victory in the two by-elections “is a clear message by Zambians that they are angry with the PF”.
UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said his party has beaten the PF by 75 percent.
“People have sent a clear message that they now have an alternative party, which is the UPND,” Mr Kakoma said.
MMD presidential spokesperson Muhabi Lungu said: “This is a good day for the opposition.”
Mr Lungu said the MMD worked hard to win the Chipata Central seat.
“We are happy and satisfied with the result because we have also won two local government seats in Petauke and Nyimba,” Mr Lungu said.
Open Society Foundation executive director Sunday Chanda congratulated the victors.
“We congratulate all parties that participated in these elections. This is the essence of democracy,” Mr Chanda said.
Mr Chanda said democracy is about respecting the will of the people.
