A 43 year old Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) scout was on Thursday night attacked and killed by an elephant in Chief Mphuka’s area in Luangwa district.

Luangwa District Commissioner, Eunie Mumba, who confirmed the incident in an interview with ZANIS in Luangwa yesterday, identified the deceased as Ben Zulu.

Mr Mumba said Mr Zulu, together with other ZAWA officers, were deployed in the area to scare away wild animals that had been attacking fields and terrorizing villages in Chief Mphuka’s area.

He said the deceased met his fate around 20:00 hours on his way back to the base after visiting his family in the same area.

The DC said government is saddened at the tragic development and has put in place emergency measures to avert any further loss of life.

He added that government has already embarked on the fencing of communities and farming blocks in the area so that animals can be kept away from attacking people and fields.

Mr Mumba also disclosed that he has already given instructions to ZAWA to gun down the same elephant that killed the ZAWA officer.

The body of Mr Zulu since is lying in Luangwa District Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial.
