The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is working out strategies to ensure that the process of local integration of refugees in Zambia is successfully implemented.

UNHCR Country Representative Laura Castro disclosed this in Solwezi today adding that the agency is working closely with the Ministry of Home Affairs in order to address all related issues.

Ms Castro said the screening of refugees willing to be integrated into the local community in Zambia has advanced and commended government for the gesture.

The UNHCR representative was speaking in Solwezi when she called on Northwestern province Assistant Secretary Felix Ngoma.

Ms Castro said UNHCR is mobilizing the much needed resources and working closely with the ministry of Home affairs to ensure that the concerns related to the resettlement of refugees that are going to be integrated into the Zambian community are adequately addressed.

She added that UNHCR is also mobilizing resources for the repatriation of over 3000 Angolan refugees in the country.

Speaking earlier,  Mr Ngoma said government has been closely following the issue of integrating refugees into the Zambian community .

Mr Ngoma assured UNHCR of government’s support in addressing issues relating to the refugees welfare in the western province.
