Traditional leader supports government’s move

Chienge, June 1, ZANIS —— Senior Chief Mununga of the Shila people of Chienge district in Luapula province has joined the bandwagon of Zambians supporting the removal of subsidies on fuel and maize by government.

Senior Chief Mununga says there is need for all Zambians to receive the removal of subsidies whole heartedly.

The traditional leader said this when Luapula province Minister, Benson Kapaya paid a courtesy call on him at his palace yesterday.

Chief Mununga said the removal of the subsidies is meant to accelerate the development of the country so that the suffering of the people in the country can be alleviated.

He said there is need for government to move away from the dependency on donor aid, adding that it is only through Zambia having its own financial resources that the country can develop.

The traditional leader said the measure will bring with it a situation where government will be able to raise the much needed financial resources for development from the savings that will be made from the removal of the subsidies.

In a related development, Senior Chief Mununga has paid tribute to President Micheal Sata for sending Ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) to explain the removal of the subsidies and its benefits to the Zambian people across the country.

He said President Sata should be commended for sending MPs and ministers to sensitise Zambians on the move.

The traditional leader said the move will enable all Zambians to understand and appreciate why government has removed the subsidies.

And Luapula province Minister, Benson Kapaya explained to the chief that the removal of the subsidies will accelerate the development of the country.

Brigadier General Kapaya said unlike the notion by some sections of the country, the subsidies have not benefited the Zambians but has instead benefited big corporations.

General Kapaya is on a tour of selected parts of Luapula province to explain the removal of the subsidies to the general public.
