Three feared dead after canoe capsized on Lake Tanganyika

 

Kasama, April 12, 2013. ZANIS———- Three people are feared dead while six others have survived after the boat they were travelling on capsized on Lake Tanganyika in Mpulungu district.

 

The accident happened on Sunday around 02:00hours near Katemwe village after a heavy storm hit the boat carrying nine people. 

Northern Province Deputy Police Commissioner Alfred Sakala has confirmed the incident to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Kasama today.

 

 Mr. Sakala said the nine are believed to have been on a fishing expedition when they met their fate.

 

The deputy Commissioner narrated that six out of the nine managed to swim while three were still missing.

 

Mr. Sakala has  named those still missing as Coax swine Brian Mwimanzi 40, Peter Mwimanzi 16 and another  one only identified  as  Shimpundu all of Posa village in Mpulungu.

 

Mr. Sakala said police have since intensified the search for the trio.

And in another development police in Kasama have recovered assorted households goods believed to have been stolen from residents of Kasama.

 

Mr Sakala said three people have been picked up to help with investigations in connection with the goods.

 

He has since asked the public who could have lost goods to go to the police and indentify the goods.

 

The recovered good include two laptops computers, 12 car batteries and other households goods.
