Rupiah Banda pleads not guilty to first count of abuse of authority of office

Former republican president Rupiah Banda has pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office of authority in an oil deal involving the Nigerian government.

Banda who appeared this morning before Chief Magistrate Joshua Banda was flanked by wife Thandiwe some former cabinet Ministers and all the opposition leaders among others.

Banda was yesterday charged with abuse of authority of office contrary to section 99 of the penal code sub 87 of the laws of Zambia.

The former head of state was yesterday arrested by the government joint investigations team and released after providing two working sureties and paying Kr 500, 000 in his own recognizance.

Banda said he had confidence in the Zambian judiciary hence the reason why he came back to Zambia to go through the all prosecution process, he has however maintained that he is being persecuted.

“I believe our judiciary will do its job to with the whole process to prove my innocence, I still feel persecuted because look around me all the opposition political party leaders are here, this is the first time it is happening in history of Zambia which shows that the opposition is being suppressed,” Banda said as he paraded the opposition party leaders.

Among many others political parties who were present at the magistrate court were the MMD and UPND.

Trial in the matter commences on 3rd April, 2013.
