PF makes in-roads in southern province

The Patriotic Front (PF) has finally

penetrated the opposition stronghold in southern province by scooping
the Livingstone parliamentary seat in yesterday’s by-election.

PF candidate in the March 14 parliamentary seat, Lawrence Evans
garnered 10,233 votes while  UPND’s Regina Musokotwane got 8,198 votes
and MMD candidate trailed in third place with 2,034 votes.

Restoration Communist Party candidate Angela Ikabongo who
withdrew from the race after succesfully filing in her nomination got
203 votes, beating UNIP candidate Green Mwanang’ombe who got a paltry
179 votes.

A total of 156 votes were rejected in the parliamentary by election
which was characterized by  a low turn-out of voters.

Returning Officer for the Livingstone parliamentary by election,
Elester Hazinji announced the results at 01:34 hours this morning and
declared Mr. Evans the winner.

And newly elected Livingstone Member of Parliament Lawrence Evans said
he was happy to scoop the seat and was ready to work with the people
of Livingstone.

Mr. Evans said he would strive to ensure water and sanitation
challenges were addressed in the tourist capital.

Meanwhile, PF supporters engaged in victory songs and dances before
the official announcement of the results which continued even after
Mr. Evans was declared winner of the Livingstone parliamentary seat.

Livingstone has over 60,000 registered voters and has 61 polling stations.
