Heavy down pour leave one dead

Chipata, March 4, ZANIS ——— A 21 – year-old man of Mchini compound of Chipata district in Eastern Province died over the weekend after being swept by a heavy current of water following a heavy down pour.

Eastern Province Deputy Commissioner of police Alfred Nawa confirmed the development to ZANIS this morning that the deceased was trapped by the strong current of water as he tried to cross Namuseche stream in Magazine compound.

Mr Nawa named the deceased as Sikampipa Tembo of house number C355 of Mchini compound who was found died yesterday along the bank of the stream.

He said that the incident is suspected to have occurred between 18:00 hours on Saturday and 06:00 hours on Sunday adding that the body was picked by police after the matter was reported by a by-passer.

“I want to confirm that a body of a 21 year old man was picked by police in the early hours of Sunday and no foul play is suspected to have occurred as no injuries were found when we picked up the body,” he said.

Mr Nawa stated that the body is lying in Chipata General Hospital mortuary awaits burial.

And several people escaped death at blue gums night club in Chipata when a wall fence which borders blue gums and Shoprite collapsed due to the heavy down pour leaving properties destroyed.

On Saturday, Chipata town experienced a heavy pour snapping road links and forcing people to remain indoors.
