RObbers have blown off part of Stanbic Bank in Chipata and made away with an undisclosed amount of money.
The burglars are believed to have raided the bank between 01:00 hours and 05:00 hours after tying up a security guard on duty.
A check by the Daily Mail around 09:00 hours yesterday (Thursday) found the bank closed to the public as police and bank officials were assessing the loss of cash and damage to property.
Police and the bank’s head of public relations Kamiza Chikula confirmed the break-in yesterday.
A notice was placed at the door indicating that the bank would not open until further notice. But business resumed by midday.
“I can confirm that thieves broke into the bank in the early hours of yesterday between 01:00 hours and 05:00 hours but at the moment, I cannot state how much was stolen. Police are still investigating the matter,” Mr Chikula said.
Eastern Province police commissioner Grace Chipalila said more details of the robbery would be known later.
Sources within the bank said despite walking away with some cash, the robbers failed to blow the bank’s vault.
The robbers failed to have access to the safe and did not tamper with computers, making it possible for business to resume.
A choking smell was still in the banking hall after resumption of business.
