Zimbabwean national appears in court over smuggled cigarettes

Siavonga, February 7, 2013, ZANIS —-  A 34 year old man of Zimbabwean national yesterday appeared in the Siavonga magistrate court for smuggling 999 bricks of Pacific brand cigarettes.

Before magistrate Bartolommeo Kaongo was Custon Charakupa of chief Masosvo in Makoni district who stood charged with one count of smuggling contrary to section 149  as read with section 156 of customs and exercise act chapter 322 of the laws of Zambia.

However the case failed to take place for trial as the other accused person in the matter was not before court but sick and was in the hospital admitted.

Meanwhile magistrate kaongo since set 5th march, 2013 for trial and the accused persons bail were extended.
Particulars of the offence alleged that on 7th December, 2012 while in Siavonga district Charakupa and Mwachazondida Nyakasvipa a Zimbabwean bus driver with intent to defraud the government or invade any regulation as to importation jointly and whilst acting together with other unknown persons did bring 999 bricks of pacific cigarettes from Zimbabwe to Zambia,  the
importation of which  is restricted by customs and exercise act.
