The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence slapped on six Kitwe residents who murdered former Patriotic Front Wusakile Member of Parliament Barnabas Chella in 2013.

In November 2014, Kitwe High Court Judge-in-charge Catherine Makungu sentenced Frederick Mulusa, Joyce Mwansa, Eric Mendulo, Samson Chisala, Kenneth Chisanga and Derrick Kalunga to death for killing Mr Chella at his farm in Kamfinsa.

The six killed Mr Chella at farm number 3416 near Mfubu Ranch on September 5, 2013 by a mob of between 40 and 50 squatters and charcoal producers.

Justice Malila said the court noted that on a fateful day, between 40 and 50 rowdy squatters and charcoal producers wielding axes, slashers, bottles and sticks besieged Mr Chella’s farmhouse.

He said the mob manhandled Mr Chella after holding hostage his worker, Fieldes Mukola, and that an unknown person hit him with a stick on his head while another man axed him before he fell down
