AN elderly woman of Lungo Village in Chief Munkanta’s area in Milenge District has died after she was beaten by three family members on suspicion that she was practising witchcraft.
Luse Kalumbwa, who is believed to have been between 65 and 70 years old, was allegedly assaulted by three relatives, a man Mbeta Nkandu, a woman Mwansa Nkandu and an 18-year-old boy, all of the same village.
Luapula Province deputy Police commissioner Webby Shula said the deceased was beaten with sticks by the suspects.
He said two of the suspects are believed to have run away to the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the 18-year-old has been apprehended to help with investigations.

Mr Shula said Ms Kalumbwa died on Friday last week and was buried the same day. The body would be exhumed for purposes of investigations.
The matter was reported to police by another relative, Friday Chilufya.
“People must stop this barbaric or cruel act of attacking old people that they suspect to be witches or wizards because of their age. It is very sad.
“We need to respect and accord them love and the care they deserve,” Mr Shula said.
He said people who kill elderly persons in society would be arrested.
