15 Chilubi school girls retrieved from marriages

About 15 girls who were recently married off by their parents from various schools in Chilubi district have been brought back to school after the intervention of their teachers.

This follows numerous reports of cases of early marriages involving young girls at various schools in chief Chiwanangala’s area of Chilubi district.

Mutimba Primary School Head Teacher Martin Chiti told ZANIS that the problem of early marriages in Chilubi was a serious one that needed urgent attention from all stakeholders.

Mr. Chiti warned parents that teachers will not sit idle and watch their pupils being married off at a tender age at the expense of being in school.

He has since called for cooperation from all stakeholders including traditional leaders, NGOs and the Church to see to it that the rampant cases of early marriages in Chilubi are halted.

Mr Chiti also called on parents to value their children’s education and grant them the opportunity to access quality education for them to have a better and productive future.
