A SECURITY Guard of Lusaka has been sentenced to 30 days of community service for stealing eight newspapers worth K40 from Zambia Daily Mail Limited.
Tembwe Zimba, 28, was charged with one count of theft.

When the matter came up for judgment before Lusaka magistrate Kunda Tantameni on Monday, Zimba was found guilty of theft and sentenced to one month community service.
“In view of all the evidence that was adduced before court and also the fact that the accused opted to remain silent calling no witnesses in his defence, I, therefore, find the accused guilty as charged and convict him accordingly,” Ms Tantameni said.

In mitigation, Zimba said he is an orphan and breadwinner for the family and that he has a wife and children who depend on him.
Passing the sentence, Ms Tantameni said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“As stated in my judgment, the complainant received their money back and also you are a first offender,” the magistrate said.
As part of his community service sentence, Zimba will be working at the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court complex or in default pay K20.
