Five people have been arrested in Sioma and Sinjembela districts of Western Province for unlawful possession of fire arms.

The five were nabbed during a combined operation conducted by the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), and the Zambia Police Service.

ZAWA Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe said the unlawful possession of fire arms is contrary to the Firearms Act, Cap 110 of the Laws of Zambia.

In a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Kalembwe disclosed that the five suspects, who will appear in court soon, were in possession of one sport and one short rifle, four short guns and six unregistered motorbikes.
Mr. Kalembwe said the exercise is part of the nationwide operation to ensure that all wildlife offenders are brought to book.

He stated that ZAWA has a duty to safeguard its wildlife resources and will ensure that wildlife crime is reduced and eradicated in the country.
