Speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Chilubi district today, Chief Chitunkubwe
said he was worried that early marriages had become a serious problem in his area.

He wondered why parents were marrying off their children at a tender age instead of sending them to school.

Chief Chitunkumbwe warned parents that he would soon institute punitive measures to punish parents who were marrying off their children prematurely, adding that the practice was detrimental to development.

The traditional leader appealed to government and NGOs to intensify their sensitization programmes about early marriages in his area if the vice is to be halted.

He said children are the future leaders of a nation who should be given a chance to be in school and get a good education so that they can contribute to the development of the country.
