The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested a 22 year-old lorry boy of Chililabombwe district for trafficking in 56 bundles of miraa.
DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo disclosed the development in a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.
Ms. Katongo said David Mwaba, 22, of Minestone compound in Chililabombwe district was arrested for trafficking in 56 bundles of miraa weighing 26.8 kg.
She also revealed that the commission over the weekend arrested more than 40 people countrywide for unlawful cultivation and trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.
The majority of those arrested are peasant farmers dotted across six provinces.
Allan Mulenga 40, and 25 year-old Mwelwa Kunda who are both peasant farmers of Milenge district, were arrested and jointly charged for illegal cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 1.5 tonnes.
In Central province, the commission arrested Jessy Susu 57, of house number ZC359, Katondo Compound in Kabwe and Mildred Mupondwa 29, a peasant farmer of Shiyenge village in Mumbwa for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 246 kg and 40.5 kg respectively.
Ms. Katongo said all the suspects will appear in court soon.
