ZUBID reiterates calls to politicians against harassing journalists

Ndola, Feb 4/15, ZANIS ——Zambia Union of Broadcasters and Other Information Disseminators (ZUBID) General Secretary, Martin Maseka, has appealed to politicians to stop harassing journalists.

Mr Maseka told ZANIS in a telephone interview in Ndola that the union has continued receiving reports of harassment, intimidation and victimisation of journalists.

“As a Union, we are concerned with the number of cases that our members are bringing to our attention. Our aim is to protect our members, we are not going to remain mute and watch our members being intimidated, victimised and harassed,” he said.

The ZUBID General Secretary further stated that the union condemns the harassment of journalists that took place during the January 20, 2015 Presidential election campaigns.

He stated that ZUBID has registered all its complaints with the Inspector General of Police, Stella Libongani and hopes for a positive outcome.

“We have registered all our complaints with the Inspector General of Police and we hope something positive comes out,” Mr Maseka said.

Mr Maseka has since urged members of the union, especially those that were harassed during the campaign period, to remain calm as the matter is being looked into.
