Civic leader expresses concern on increased stigma of the elderly

Mkushi, January 12th, 2014, ZANIS —-  A Civic Leader in Luano District’s Chembe Chiefdom has reiterated his appeal for a Police Post in the area to curb the increasing assault cases.

ZANIS reports that Mwalala Ward Councillor Benford Katiti  said that there was need for a police post in the area to address the increased assault incidences in various parts of the Chiefdom.

Mr. Katiti pointed out that the more worrying situation involved rampant stigmatizing and assaulting of Elderly persons, who are being targeted in allegations of suspected witch craft.

The civic leader said in an interview today that recently elderly people were always being attacked among them a 75 year old woman who was injured by her assailants after the suspected her of being a witch.

In related contributions,  various Mkushi based Civil Society  and Faith Based Organisations(FBOs), have condemned the violence and stigmatization that is targeted against the Elderly in Chembe Chiefdom.

From one comment, Mkushi Pastors Fellowship Chairperson Felix Bwalya observed that the matter was saddening, saying that the Human Rights for the Elderly were being violated.
