The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested 12 people for drug related offences around the country.
Among the arrested was a 22 year old Tanzanian national, Omali Saidi of Manguluweni area in Dar-es-Salaam, who was jointly charged with three Zambians, Izukanji Chanda 22, of Tindi village in Nakonde, Obi Sinkamba 29, also of Nakonde and an 18 year old boy of Kansa area of Kasama district for trafficking in cocaine.
DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo said in a statement to ZANIS today that the quartet was arrested in Muchinga province for trafficking in five sachets of cocaine and 253 grams of cannabis.
“The four were also found in possession of paraphernalia suspected to be used in administering drugs,” Ms. Katongo said.
She said a 44 year old Alice Nakanyika of Shemu village in Isoka district was also arrested for trafficking in 60 bundles of Mira weighing 30.45 kilogrammes.
Meanwhile, three women of Luano valley in Central province have been arrested for trafficking in cannabis while Ennie Zimba, 47, a peasant farmer of Jordan village has also been nabbed for trading in cannabis seeds weighing 26.80 kg.
Ms. Katongo said Bridget Moonga 19, a peasant farmer of Milimo village and Dorcas Hamboza 35, also a peasant farmer of Spider village were arrested for trafficking in 5.3kgs of loose cannabis and 2kg of cannabis seed respectively.
“In other parts of the country, the Commission has arrested and jointly charged Temwani Ngámbi, 29, an inmate of Mumbwa State Prison and Jericho Njobvu, 24, also an inmate of the same prison for trafficking in 30 balls of cannabis weighing 12.5g,” She explained.
She added that DEC also arrested two people in Kalomo district of Southern province for trafficking in cannabis.
She named the two as Pendrew Siamwinde 61, a peasant farmers of Silumba Á’ village for trafficking in 9.173kgs of cannabis and Joe Kayongo, 56, a peasant farmer of Mapatizya township for trafficking in 3.02kgs of loose cannabis.
Ms. Katongo said all the suspects will appear in court soon.
