FRA partially pays Luwingu farmers
Luwingu, December 30, 2014,ZANIS–Some farmers who sold their maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) in Luwingu district of Northern Province have been paid their dues.

ZANIS reports that the FRA finished the exercise of paying the farmers yesterday through the National Savings and Credit Bank (NATSAVE).

Government through the FRA released K5 million to pay farmers in Luwingu district but the money sent is reported to very minimal that it could not settle the outstanding dues for all of the farmers.

However, some aggrieved farmers complained to Zambia News and Information Services that the bank refused to pay them because they were not among those whose names were appearing on the payment schedule.

“We do not know what to do because we have tried all avenues to withdraw our maize we sold to the Food Reserve Agency because the agency has failed to pay us,” they lamented.

The bank started paying farmers in luwingu on Tuesday last week and stopped the exercise yessterday because the money which was released for the farmers in Luwingu district through NATSAVE has been exhausted.

A check by ZANIS found scores of farmers who came from far- flung areas to receive their dues loitering while many of them appeared stranded.

“When coming here we borrowed money from our friends thinking that we are going to be paid, now how we going to explain to our colleagues,” they complained.
