Mongu Fish Mongers defy fish ban

Mongu ,  December 9, ZANIS—Fish mongers in Mongu District in Western Province have defied the fish ban imposed by government to allow for the breeding of fish in various water bodies in the country.

The fish ban which is effected annually from December 1 to February 28 or 29 has been taken lightly by the fish traders as they have continued to trade in dry fish despite the ban.

A check by ZANIS at the main fish vending centres of Liyoyelo and Town Centre markets in the provincial capital found marketers selling varieties of dry fish.

When contacted for a comment, Provincial Acting Principal Fisheries Officer Gething Chisule told ZANIS that the fish mongers had been given a 14 day ultimatum to sale their fish stocks.

He said the department had decided to give the fish mongers a 14 day grace period following requests from the marketers to enable them exhaust their current stocks.

Mr Cisule said the 14 day ultimatum ends on December 14, 2014 and anyone found vending in dry fish will be arrested and their merchandise confiscated.
