Zambia progresses in implementing gender policy

Lusaka, December 4, ZANIS– Zambia has made substantial progress in implementing the 2,000 national gender policy which aims at achieving gender equality, equity and empowerment of women in the country.

Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini said the policy has taken a holistic approach towards ensuring that both men and women participate fully and equitably benefit from the various national development processes.

Dr. Matibini however stated that meeting the country’s goal of achieving gender equality requires a multi-sector approach involving communities and leaders at all levels.

He said this in Lusaka today during the official launch of the Zambia Women Parliamentarians Caucus (ZWPC) strategic plan for 2014-2016.

He has since appealed to all parliamentarians to use the strategic plan as a reference and guide in the discharge of the responsibilities bestowed on them by the people of Zambia in order to accelerate the
development agenda of the country.

Dr. Matibini further challenged Members of Parliament to complement government efforts in addressing challenges that impede women progress.

And ZWPC chairperson Nkandu Luo said the plan has come at a time when there were many calls for active participation of women in decision making positions.

Professor Luo said the plan will among other measures identify laws that impede women from progressing for either repeal or amendments including development of a programme of action for advocacy engagement with stakeholders.

She noted that women have in the past continued to face widespread discrimination and lacking sufficient representation in decision making positions especially in politics.

Prof. Luo reaffirmed that the caucus was commitment to encourage women’s participation in all issues pertaining to national development and to promote self-reliance and economic independence of women.

She thanked the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for providing financial and technical support towards the development of the strategic plan.
