The Choma Municipal Council has warned all residents against growing maize in residential areas or along major roads.

The local authority said the move was aimed at controlling the breeding of mosquitoes and the possible outbreak of some other diseases in the district.

This is in accordance with the provisions of the public health Act Cap 295 and the local government Act Cap 281 of the laws of Zambia.

Choma Municipal Council Public Relations Officer Ramona Phiri said this in a statement released to ZANIS today.

Ms. Phiri said those who will wantonly defy the law will have their maize crops slashed and be prosecuted in the courts of law.

"I wish to warn all Choma residents to desist from growing maize in the compounds or near major roads," she said.

She added that, "the council has a mandate to take all necessary measures aimed at improving public health and prevention of any disease outbreak."
