33 Nansenga groups empowered with goats

Chikankata, 29 October, 2014, ZANIS……..The government through the Ministry of Community Development has handed over goats to 33 to beneficiary groups in Nansenga area of Chikankata district under an empowerment scheme.

Acting District Commissioner Sekani Tembo said that the programme is intended to help the needy households in the community of Nansenga by way of alternative livelihood intervention programmes.

He said the initiative is meant to help the female headed households, the terminally ill, child headed households and also the aged people in the community.

Mr Tembo explained that the initiative is aimed at empowering people by providing a means of income and a way of poverty alleviation.

Mr. Tembo said it was for this reason that the Government had embarked on the programme of alternative livelihood by empowering the majority of the vulnerable in the community.

Chikankata District Community Development Officer Rita Mhone encouraged the beneficiaries that the success of the programme depended on their ability to pass on the benefits to other intended beneficiaries.

She said that the community should cooperate and understand the members of the community by both those who are being empowered today and those who will be empowered in the near future because the programme is an on-going exercise.

She urged the beneficiaries to put the goat empowerment programme to good use and pass on to other intended beneficiaries in the community.

Speaking at the same event was Councilor for Nansenga Ward Agnes Ngandu who thanked the Government for bringing development to Nansenga.

She said women were not only child bearers but are capable of contributing to the Economy of the country once they are empowered.

She urged the community of Nansenga to continue being hardworking in order to improve their livelihood.

Speaking on behalf of the Nansenga Community, Lucia Lumina thanked the government through the Ministry of Community Development for empowering the vulnerable in their community.
