Nineteen pupils drown in Gwembe district

 


Choma, 24, 2014, ZANIS —-  Nineteen pupils and two suspected parents died after the dugout canoe they were travelling in capsized on Lake Kariba in Gwembe District.

 


ZANIS reports that Gwembe District Commissioner Alice Mwiinga confirmed the incident in an interview, today.

 

Ms. Mwiinga  said which happened this morning and said only one pupil managed to swim ashore ad notified the police.

 


She said the pupils and the two suspected parents were travelling from Shenga primary School to Kalilezye primary School for Independence celebrations when they met their fate.

 

The Commissioner said it is likely that strong waves on the lake could have caused the incident.

 

“There is a likelihood that strong waves precipitated by strong wind could have led to the incident.” Said Ms Mwiinga.

 


Ms Mwiinga said the deceased’ s bodies have not yet been retrieved from the lake but that police were frantically searching for the bodies.
