Standard Chartered commends Kaseba, Tutu for campaigning against child

—-Standard Chartered Bank Head of Education and Girls Programmes, Payal Dalal, has commended First Lady, Christine Kaseba and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutu, for speaking out and joining Zambia’s campaign against child marriages.

 

Ms Dalal said in a statement released to ZANIS today that Standard Chartered Bank will on September 20, 2014 re-launch the Goal Programme which focuses on providing life skills education for adolescent girls aged 12 to 20 years using the power of sport.

 

She said through workshops, topics such as HIV/AIDS prevention, career development and mentorship are taught.

 

Ms Dalal stated that Goal is an effective way to encourage girl child education and career development by helping to educate and empower girls and prevent child marriages.

 

She observed that child brides are more likely to die from complications in pregnancy and child birth.

 

Ms Dalal also observed that child brides are also likely to drop out of school for reasons including customs and culture.
