Mbala District Commissioner, Best Kabulembe has ordered for the immediate closure of the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) central satellite depot in the District due to alleged malpractices by some unscrupulous maize dealers.
Mr. Kabulembe says this is because the Mbala central satellite depot was buying maize mostly from businessmen who are using the small scale farmers to sell on their behalf.

This is according to a letter addressed to Northern Province FRA marketing Manager and made available to ZANIS in Mbala this afternoon.

And Mr. Kabulembe has suggested that the new satellite should be opened at Mutitimya in Senior Chief Nsokolo’s area where farmers cover long distances to sell their produce to FRA satellite depots.

He has observed that some business men who have the privilege to sell the maize to private buyers were using small scale farmers to deliver their maize to FRA more than three times.

Mr. Kabulembe also disclosed that the FRA has already purchased more maize surpassing the district target of 23, 750 metric tons.
