Lukulu battles with malnutrition
Lukulu, July 30, 2014, ZANIS — Lukulu district in the western province is battling with a high number of malnourished children .
District Nutritionist Mwakalombe Kasweka said malnutrition among children is a source of concern to the health authorities with 31 cases recoded between January and June this year.
Ms. Kasweka said in order to mitigate the problem the district hospital is embarking on introducing a nutrition garden.
She however pointed out that the district recorded a decrease in underweight children were last year the statistics were at seven percent but have dropped to five percent in 2014.
Ms. Kasweka added that 30 community based volunteers have been trained to sensitize the communities on good nutrition for children adding that child health week activities will be an ongoing program as a strategy to reduce the cases.
The district nutritionist has since called on all health centers in the district to include nutrition gardens both at centers and household levels in their planning.
This came to light yesterday during the two- day Medium Term Expenditure Framework workshop for 2015-2017 for the Ministry of Health held at Lukulu Council Chambers.

Lukulu developmental projects on course
Mitete, July 30, 2014, ZANIS… The first phase of construction of the Lukulu district hospital will be completed in September this year.
Lukulu District Health Promotions Officer Mark Mutozi has confirmed the development.
Mr Mutozi said this in his presentation on infrastructure development for the district at a two-day workshop on the District Planning Launch of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework for 2015-2017 for Mitete and Lukulu districts.
Mr. Mutozi said 95 percent of the works have so far been done and comprises the Out Patient Department (OPD) , Administration ,X-Ray and the Maternity Ward .
He said the hospital will also be connected to power in the first phase.
Mr Mutozi said the second phase of construction will commence in November this year and that once completed the district hospital will provide a quality and sustainable environment for the provision of health services.
Mr. Mutozi also reported that the construction of staff accommodation at Mulongo Health Post will be complete by September this year.
In another development, Mr. Mutozi informed participants at the workshop that construction of 9 Health posts both in Mitete and Lukulu districts has commenced and will be completed by 2016.
Mr. Mutozi further said some of the on-going projects in the two districts include the construction of a maternity wing at Mayankwa rural health centre and staff houses at Sitaka rural health centre.
Others are the construction of staff accommodation and VIPs at Mulongo health post and rehabilitation of Sikunduko and Ngimbu rural health centres.
